AMD's second quarter net profit of 35 million US dollars(electronics manufacturing expo news)

07 Aug 2019

On July 31, AMD released its second quarter earnings report for the 2019 fiscal year. The financial report shows that AMD's second-quarter electronics manufacturing expo revenue was $1.53 billion, down 13% year-on-year; net profit was $35 million, down 70% year-on-year.

AMD's second-quarter revenue exceeded Wall Street analysts' average expectations. Adjusted earnings per share were in line with expectations, but revenue outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2019 fell short of market expectations, causing the company's share price to fall more than 7% in after-hours trading.

TSMC announces performance-enhanced 7nm and 5nm manufacturing processes

Foreign media reported that TSMC has quietly introduced a performance-enhancing electronics manufacturing expo version of the 7nm deep ultraviolet (N7 / DUV) and 5nm extreme ultraviolet (N5 / EUV) manufacturing processes.

The company's N7P and N5P technologies are designed for customers who need to run faster and consume less power. Although the design rules for N7P and N7 are the same, the new process optimizes front-end (FEOL) and mid-range (MOL) processes to increase performance by 7% at the same power or 10% at the same frequency.

At the 2019 VLSI Symposium in Japan, TSMC revealed which customers have access to new processes, but the company does not seem to have a widely advertised idea. It is reported that N7P uses proven deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography. It does not increase the density of the transistor compared to the N7.

TSMC customers who need to increase transistor density by about 18-20% are expected to use TSMC's N7+ and N6 processes, which use EUV lithography for multi-layer processing.

Finally, although N7 and N6 are both “long” nodes in the next few years, TSMC will bring significant density, power and performance improvements at the next N5 node. Similarly, an enhanced version called N5P will be available after N5, supplemented by electronics manufacturing expo FEOL and MOL optimizations to increase the performance of the chip by 7% at the same power or 15% at the same frequency.
