From Automation to Embodied AI: AI Workers Enter the Factory Floor

Lumos Robotics’ MOS2 highlights how embodied intelligence is moving beyond demonstrations to real-world manufacturing applications

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industrial manufacturing, the next wave of automation is moving beyond software and traditional robotics. Embodied AI—intelligent systems that can perceive, understand and physically interact with their surroundings—is beginning to enter real production environments.

A recent example comes from Chinese robotics developer Lumos Robotics, which has launched its next-generation mobile manipulator, MOS2, positioned as an “AI Worker” for industrial applications.

Unlike conventional industrial robots designed for fixed, repetitive operations, MOS2 combines a mobile platform, dual arms, multimodal perception and flexible end-of-arm tooling. With a combined payload capacity of up to 50 kg, the system is designed to navigate space-constrained factory environments and perform a range of tasks across different production workflows.

From the Lab to the Production Line

What makes the development particularly significant is its deployment in real manufacturing environments.

MOS2 has been deployed on Mitsubishi Electric’s PLC production lines, where the robotic system is being used for applications including quality inspection, screwdriving, box handling and material handling.

The first-generation MOS system has also completed more than 1,000 hours of continuous, failure-free operation at Mitsubishi Electric’s Changshu factory, demonstrating how embodied AI can be tested and refined through real production scenarios rather than laboratory demonstrations alone.

In visual inspection applications, the system can identify PLC products of different sizes and use coordinated dual-arm movements to conduct six-sided visual inspections for surface defects. Its applications have subsequently expanded from inspection into assembly, logistics and material handling.

This transition points to an important shift in industrial automation: robots are increasingly expected not only to execute pre-programmed movements, but also to perceive changing environments, respond to task conditions and adapt their operations.

Why Embodied AI Matters for Electronics Manufacturing

For electronics manufacturers, this development could have particular significance.

Production environments are becoming increasingly complex as manufacturers face growing product variety, shorter production cycles and greater demand for flexible automation. Traditional automation remains highly effective for standardized, repetitive processes, but more dynamic manufacturing scenarios can require systems capable of handling variation and interacting with less predictable environments.

The combination of AI, machine vision, robotics, sensing and manufacturing data is therefore emerging as an important direction for the smart factory.

Lumos Robotics plans to expand the application of its embodied-intelligence technology into areas including electronics, automotive and semiconductor manufacturing—sectors where flexible automation and intelligent inspection are becoming increasingly important.
